Linux is the most versatile, powerful and customizable operating system out there. Actually, it’s the big dad of all operating systems. Being Open Source gives it transparency and endless ways to customize. You can make it look/feel the way you want, the limitation is your creativity.

Pixel 2: Initial Thought from a Tech Enthusiast

Google just unveiled their new range of smartphones. Namely a 5-inch Pixel 2 and a larger 6-inch Pixel 2 XL. Here are my first impressions

Unlike the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, these new Pixels are not a remake of the old design from 2016.

Both have a metal back with a glass top panel that doesn’t enable wireless charging. No other 2017 Flagship has a metal back, giving the Pixel 2s a unique premium feel.

Sadly, the smaller Pixel 2 has an ugly design on the back. The Rear camera, instead of being in a corner or the center of the top panel, sits in an awkward position. The thick bezels on the front might be a major turnoff for some people.

The larger Pixel 2 XL is simply beautiful. With its glass that curves around the edges, slim bezels, high screen-to-body ratio and the properly positioned rear camera, it overcomes the downsides of its smaller brother.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have a button with colors contrasting the aluminum body, which for me is a nice touch. However, for a more executive look, the ‘Just Black’ color option will do the job.

The Pixel 2 has a 5-inch 1920×1080 pOLED screen which is perfect for a phone this size.

The Pixel 2 XL has a taller 6-inch 2880×1440 pOLED screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio and rounded corners. It looks very similar to an S8 but without a curved screen. Google has done a great job with the Pixel 2 XL by pitting a 6-inch screen onto what is otherwise a 5.5 inch chassis.

With the new Pixels you get unlimited cloud storage for all your photos and videos in original quality. A great feature for people like me who take a lot of photos.

Front facing speakers are an asset that’s absent in almost all flagships today, Save the Pixel 2. Even the Pixel 2 XL found enough space to put two of them despite the obvious lack of space in the bezels.

There is also a pressure sensitive side, similar to the one we saw on HTC U11. Simply squeeze to launch Google Assistant. Thank God there is no Bixby button.

It also has, what Google claims to be, the fastest fingerprint scanner ever.

The absence of a headphone jack is a bad call on an otherwise perfect phone.

With Google lens paired with Assistant, the ability automatically identify the song that’s being played at a bar or party, IP67 water resistance, Always on display and a lot more, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL are packed with features that are actually useful.

The Pixel 2 and 2 XL both have the same cameras; The highest rated smartphone camera ever! with a DxO Mark score of 98, Google is aiming for the moon. The larger pixel size of 1.6μm and smaller aperture of f/1.8 promises great performance in low light. The 12.2 Megapixel sensor strikes the balance between pixel size and resolution.

Both have a portrait mode on both the front and rear shooters without having a secondary lens. Thanks to Machine learning.

Nothing crazy here, with a Snapdragon 835 and Adreno 540 both the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL have what it takes to be a flagship in 2017.

The Pixel 2 and 2 XL has a 2700mAh and 3520mAh battery respectively. With great optimisations in Android Oreo both these devices are sure to last more than one day even with heavy use. It also has quick charge, Google claims 7 hours of use with a 15-minute charge.

Unlike last year, Google didn’t price their Pixels like iPhones. Not only are they less expensive than their iOS competition, but also better in some places.

With a price tag from 650-950$ the Pixel 2 and 2 XL are well priced.

Android’s most anticipated phone of 2017 didn’t disappoint with it’s specs or pricing. Already my favorite; Without doubt, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL is one of the best phone you can get right now.

The latest photo of OnePlus 5 released by Android Police

Android Police has just shared a new image of OnePlus 5 which is allegedly a press render. This photo shows that the early leaked renders of OnePlus 5 are not true. It looks much different from what several leaks have shown. The phone, as announced today, will be launched on June 20th.  This leak actually shows that OnePlus 5 looks like iPhone 7+.  The dual cameras are placed in the corner and not in the center. Other confirmed details include the presence of SnapDragon 835 SoC.

The Thinnest Gaming Laptop has Arrived! – ASUS Zephyrus

Last day, at CompteX2017, ASUS launched a super thin laptop Zephyrus named after the Greek god of west wind. Why you ask? It is the thinnest and lightest laptop with a GTX 1080, This Zephyrus is just 16.9mm thick and weighs 2.2 kilos. The laptop is so pleasing for people like me who hates thick RGB gaming laptops. We’ve seen so many ‘thin’ gaming laptops in the past, like the Razor Blade Stealth which proved it wasn’t possible to pack ultra-slim laptops with loads of power, but the boundaries are pushed further here. The Asus RoG Zephyrus is so thin and powerful thanks to Nvidia’s  Max-Q which they revealed during their keynote address at Computex in Taiwan.

In a nutshell, Nvidia Max-Q is a design system developed to integrate desktop grade performance in thin laptop form factor, this is achieved by the optimization of cooling system and power management of the laptop for maximum cooling and efficiency. This is not a new fabrication but uses higher quality 1080s from the line and undervolting them for power efficiency.

Also, The RGB Keyboard and trackpad which doubles as a number pad is shifted down to make way for a grill which covers the GPU and CPU for cooling. The laptop shifts up when opened with a hinge mechanism for better airflow

Price and Release Dates

All the thinness and glory comes with a hefty price tag.

The laptop comes with two variants, one with the GTX 1070, and the other with GTX 1080 variant.

  • Asus RoG Zephyrus (GTX 1070): $2299
  • Asus RoG Zephyrus (GTX 1080): $2699

The Asus RoG Zephyrus is said to be released at the end of June 2017 (USA).

A cheaper variant of Zephyrus with GTX 1060 is also rumored to be launched by July 2017.

If you are comparing it to laptops of the same thickness then the Asus RoG Zephyrus is a beast.

Display: 15.6in Full HD 120Hz “Wide View” screen

Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080

Storage: Upto 1TB SSD

This Ransomware is Hitting Computers Everywhere and Could Cost You Hundreds of Dollars

The world woke up with news of one of the largest ransomware attack of all time that had already infected over 200,000 Windows systems worldwide in the last 24 hours. This massive ransomware campaign hit computers of thousands of private companies, public organizations and the general public across the world – this attack is believed to be the most massive ransomware campaign to date. This ransomware is a variant of ransomware known as WannaCry (aka ‘Wana Decrypt0r,’ ‘WannaCryptor’, ‘WCRY’).

How do you protect your computer?

Microsoft just surprised all of us by the way they handled this issue. They just released an emergency security patch update for all version of Windows, including expired versions ( Windows XP, Vista, Windows 8, Server 2003 and 2008 Editions).

If you are using any of the above-mentioned version of Windows then you are strongly advised to download and APPLY THE PATCH ASAP!

  • Avoid clicking on links/opening attachments/emails from people you don’t (spam)
  • Disable the outdated protocol SMBv1.
  • Block connections to the RDP or SMB protocol directly from the internet.
  • Isolate unpatched or unsupported systems from the internal network.
  • Make back-ups of your files and verify that they can be restored.
    Switch to Linux/Ubuntu 😉

I am using Windows 10, what to do?

You’re safe. Microsoft quoted:

“The exploit code used by WannaCrypt was designed to work only against unpatched Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (or earlier OS) systems, so Windows 10 PCs are not affected by this attack,”

How is it spreading?

Ransomware like these are usually propagated through spam emails and links. It tricks the users to download and execute a malicious attachment. When one machine gets infected it will scan the entire internal network and infect vulnerable machines.

Screenshot from an infected PC Source: Twitter

Once infected with the WannaCry ransomware, victims are asked to pay up to $300 in bitcoin in order to remove the infection from their PCs.

Some Facts about this ransomware

  • This ransomware campaign spreads itself through the internal network using a recently patched Windows vulnerability.
  • When one machine gets infected it will scan the entire internal network and infect vulnerable machines.
  • Machines are not required to be connected to the internet for the encryption process to take place.
  • Designed to work only against unpatched Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (or earlier OS) systems.
  • Machines that have been patched with MS17-010 are not vulnerable to the exploit, but could still be infected through other infection methods such as phishing e-mails.
  • European Countries and Russia were the main victims, followed by USA and India.
  • Portugal Telecom, Spanish telecom giant Telefónica and Russia’s MegaFon were victims of the attack, but it did not affect their client/services.
  • Global Courier company Fedex was also affected

In India, Andhra Pradesh Police Department got affected by this ransomware. More than 18 computers from different units of Andhra Pradesh’s police departments were affected.

A UK cyber security researcher @malwaretechblog, found and activated a “kill switch” in the malware. The switch was hard coded into the ransomware in case the creator wanted to stop it spreading. This involved a very long nonsensical domain name (hxxp://www[.]iuqerfsodp9ifjaposdfjhgosurijfaewrwergwea[.]com ) to which it sends a request like if it was looking up a normal website – and if the connection succeeds, the kill switch takes effect and the malware stops spreading.

@malwaretechblog found that this domain was not registered by the attackers so he quickly purchased that domain for $10.69. Then he saw the domain name was registering thousands of connections every second. Anyway, this accidentally (not accidental, he is a professional security researcher) triggered a “kill switch” that prevented the wide spread of the WannaCry ransomware, at least for now.

Read @malwaretechblog‘s article here

But, the kill switch will not help those computers which are already infected with the ransomware, and and it’s possible that there are other variants of the malware with different kill switches that will continue to spread.

Who is behind this?

The malware was made available on the web by a group called Shadow Brokers, which claimed last year to have stolen a cache of “cyber weapons” from the National Security Agency (NSA).

What is Microsoft Fluent Design System?

In Short: Fluent Design System (code name Project Neon) is Microsofts’s attempt for a cleaner and beautiful user experience. This project will slowly change the look and feel of all Windows apps. Light, depth, motion, material, and scale are the five pillars upon which Microsoft Fluent Design System is built. The transition to Fluent Design will take place slowly over the course of next few months.

Last Day at ‘Build 2017′ conference Microsoft announced their new design system. In the past few months, we’ve seen some leaks of Project Neon which suggested the basic look and feel of Windows operating system will have a big transition in future. Microsoft Fluent Design is that transition. Some of the elements of Fluent Design will be implemented on Windows 10 in the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update which will arrive in September.

So, What is MFDS?

Fluent Design System will bring a radical change in the design philosophy of Microsoft. It’s somewhat like the change Material Design brought in the user experience of Android. The change in colors, animation, icons and UI will make Windows much fresher from the existing Metro UI.  With MFDS, Microsoft is helping developers build more “delightful” applications. But, In many ways, the ideas behind Fluent resemble those of Google’s Material Design language. The main purpose here is to give developers access to a single design language that will work well across devices.

Fluent Design System is not just designed for Windows Ecosystem. You will be able to see it in Android, iOS apps by Microsoft and much importantly Fluent Design System will also govern the look of apps compatible with devices like HoloLens.

The rollout of Fluent Design System will be first delivered to the members of Insider program.

Five Pillars of Microsoft Fluent Design System
Five Pillars of Microsoft Fluent Design System
  • Light: Controls lighting, shadows and helps user for distraction free experience.
  • Depth: Controls Parallax effect and gives dimensions to the window.
  • Motion: Controls the opening/closing of a window and to show a connection and relation between different elements and objects.
  • Material: Manifestation of the texture of an element and the change it brings on interaction.
  • Scale: Adapting the elements accordingly during the change in dimension and screen size.
